A guide to titling your chapters
Chapter titles are more than just labels; they’re mini hooks designed to grab a reader’s attention and leave them wanting more. When it comes to serialized fiction where chapters are released gradually, your titles need to do double duty: entice readers to purchase and avoid spoilers. Here’s how to master the art of crafting compelling chapter titles:
The standout quote approach
Choose a line of dialogue of narration that is both captivating and contextually ambiguous. It should pique curiosity without revealing crucial plot points.
Be sure that the chosen quote reflects the overall tone of the chapter - whether it’s humorous, suspenseful, or romantic - and look for lines with strong imagery, emotional weight, or a hint of mystery.
For example, “Tell me if you don’t feel it too.” or “How about rival assassins with benefits?”.
The central feature approach
Your chapter titles can also focus on a central theme, character, or event in the chapter. For example, “The betrayal”, “A midnight encounter”, “Damien’s dark past”, “Night with the quarterback”.
You can tease, but not reveal—offer a glimpse of what’s to come without giving away specific details. Instead of “Sarah discovers the killer’s identity”, try “Sarah’s suspicions 👀"
Striking the right balance in whatever approach you take is key. While you want to be mysterious, avoid being overly vague or confusing. The title should still give readers a general sense of what the chapter is about.
You can also add emojis to your chapter titles to add some visual pizazz. We recommend using no more than 1 emoji at a time. Maintain a consistent style and tone throughout your chapter titles to create a sense of cohesion and strengthen your brand as a writer.
By following these guidelines, you can craft chapter titles that are both intriguing and spoiler-free, enticing readers to unlock the next chapter in your story.
